I purchased my dog, Lucky, when she was four weeks old from a local breeder in Lucerne Valley. She was the runt and the last puppy available. Just shy of a year old, she was diagnosed with a heart murmur that wouldn’t go away, and I was referred to a vet cardiologist. I couldn’t afford to take myself to a cardiologist, let alone my dog.
She is now four years old. We moved to a much higher altitude, and Lucky simply stopped participating in life. She is a Queensland Healer. When healthy, these dogs are insanely active. She was spending her days inside, barely moving. It was apparent she needed to be seen.
I took her to Dr. Dennison. He listened to her heart and lungs and told me her heart sounded “like tennis shoes in a dryer” and that her lungs were struggling. About a month later, we returned for X-rays. At that point, if we could get her outside, we would get partway up the driveway and Lucky would stop walking.
Doc took the X-rays, sat in the front office for about ten minutes studying them, and came back with a prescription. Two pills, twice a day and, completely within our budget.
It has been just two weeks. This morning Lucky chased a skunk, got sprayed in the face, and then ran circles around our older dog.
Doc was straightforward with me: Lucky’s life will be shorter than most and eventually her heart will be waterboarded. But because of his knowledge, confidence, kindness, and willingness to help, she gets to live the best life she can for whatever time she has. Through Plateau Valley Animal Hospital, that is a gift I get to give my dog, and I am forever grateful.

My dog had an allergic reaction while camping up on the Mesa. The closest vet was Plateau Valley animal hospital, we called them late on Saturday evening and they quickly answered and met us there. The doctor was fast acting, professional, and calm. They were extremely helpful!
